Welcome to Bathurst Rotary Engines

Bathurst Rotary Engines is a provider of Mazda rotary engine rebuild services in East Berlin, Pennsylvania. I have been racing and building rotary engines for over 10 years. I have competed in SCCA Autocross with my bridge ported RX-7, picking up class wins and region championships along the way. I have had a passion for the rotary engine ever since my first car, an '04 RX-8. Not too many people these days build rotaries, especially on the east coast. Many older shops have shut down, and not many filling the void. My goal is to keep these rotary powered cars from being a forgotten thing of the past. With a background in mechanical engineering, I strive to provide a quality rebuild at an affordable price for all of my customers. I use only high-quality parts, tailored to each engine's specific needs. From stock rebuilds to high performance ported engines, I can build to suit for each customer's specific goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of engines do you specialize in?

I specialize in all Mazda 13B and 12A wankel rotary engines.

How long does an engine rebuild typically take?

The duration of an engine rebuild varies depending on the scope of work. I also work a full time engineering job so I usualy only do a handful of builds each year. I try to take my time with each one. With the rotary engine, patience and attention to detail is rewarded with good compression. Most basic rebuilds are completed in about a month. Porting, specialty parts, or replacement of major components usually adds a few weeks to each job.

Do you offer a warranty on your services?

Due to the complex maintenance requirements and possible racing applications of these engines, I do not offer a warranty on any parts, services or rebuilds.

Do you have a shop?

I currently do not have a shop that is open to the public. I am by appointment only as I work out of my home garage. Because of this, it is preferred to bring just the engine short block, stripped of all accessories for rebuilds. Please see the contact page to discuss your build.

What all should I bring when dropping off the engine?

Please strip the engine as much as possible. All accessories such as alternator, water pump, A/C systems, wiring, gaskets, etc. should be removed from the engine. As close to a bare short block as possible. This makes the rebuild process more streamlined for me, and the car owner will have a better idea of how and where things came off as these items vary from car to car. I cannot be responsible for accessory items that I cannot test, or external consumable items (gaskets, O-Rings) that may have been lost during transport or teardown.

Do not remove the front hub bolt (holding crank pulley) and leave the flywheel attached. You may remove the clutch.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes. A deposit of $1500 is taken at engine drop off. The rest will be owed at pickup. An estimate will be given for the rebuild at drop off but is subject to change if engine internals are damaged or worn and need replaced. Customer will be contacted after teardown to discuss engine condition and recomendations will be given if necessary.
